Intel launches "ATOM"

Computex 2008, being held at Taipei is surely a bigger event than usual. What with major launches taking place everyday at the mega-event. Keeping with the trend, Intel has unveiled "Atom", the set of processors that were previously under the codename "Diamondville". These new processors are mainly targeted at cheap notebooks and low-end desktops.

"Atom" follows in the footsteps of "Silverthorne" that was released specifically for Mobile Internet devices (MIDs). "Atom" processors are small ( as the name suggests), measuring about 25mm x 25mm x 1.6mm. With micro-architecture is based on 45 nanometre high-K metal gate technology and around 47-million transistors packed together into its booty, the Atom certainly packs quite a powerful punch, especially considering its primary market.
There are two flavors to "Atom"; one, Atom N270 meant for cheap notebooks or netbooks and the other, Atom 230 meant for low-power desktops or nettops. Intel is targeting the educational as well as emerging market segment.

The Atom N270 runs at clock speeds of 1.6GHz, front side bus speeds of 533MHz, and features 512KB L2 cache and a Thermal Design Power (TDP) rating of 2.5 watts.

On the other hand, the Atom 230 runs at clock speeds of 1.6GHz, front side bus speeds of 533MHz, and features 512KB L2 cache and a Thermal Design Power (TDP) rating of 4.0 watts.

The processors can be used along with Intel 945GC chipset to offer a low-power desktop configuration.

Netbooks and Nettops with "Atom" processors are expected to ship with OEMs in the coming few months and will be made available world-wide by end of this year. Also there have been talks of the OLPC project trying to ink a deal with Intel for the usage of "Atom" processors in the XO.
